Crab is one of
the most coveted sea foods like prawns and fish. In restaurants, they can be a
little expensive, but there are other various restaurants that serve cheaper
servings of crabs. Our taste buds love them, but because they can be pricey, we
don’t usually include them in our baskets when we’re shopping.
That is actually
a good thing- a some sort of blessing in disguise. Crabs are delicious, yes.
And crabs are also nutritious. However, like prawns, when consumed constantly,
they can also bring dangers to our health.
Crabs and Health
Contrary to
popular belief, crabs are not high in calories. Crabs have fats, but
generally those are unsaturated fats, which are considered as heart
healthy and not hazardous to our health in general. Like a lot of sea foods,
crabs are also high in Omega 3 fatty acids, which makes your heart
healthier and keeps you away from any heart related diseases, possible cancer
risks, even depression and anxiety.
People take extra
care when consuming sea food, especially fish, with the concern of mercury poisoning. The good thing about crabs is you don’t have to worry about mercury
poisoning. Crabs have all the health benefits of other sea foods without the
worries of poisoning.
The other
vitamins and minerals provided by crabs are:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- B Vitamins
- B12
- Zinc
- Copper
- Selenium
- Chromium
The presence of chromium
in crabs makes them good for those who have diabetes. Chromium helps insulin
metabolize sugar, which lowers the blood glucose in the body.
The presence of selenium
in crabs is also an advantage to those who love crab meat. A high level of
selenium in the body reduces the risks of certain cancers.
The health
benefits of crabs are just too good to set aside. There are plenty of ways to
cook crabs. There are even restaurants that serve crabs to go.
Since crab meat
is healthy and delicious, it can be incorporated in meals, even in salads.
There are just precautions, however:
Some people are
allergic to crab meat. If you have this allergy, it is better to stay away from
food and other dishes that contain crab meat. There’s also a big chance that
you’re allergic to prawns and lobster.
Remember, too
much is too much. Crabs can be good, but too much of them can put your health
at risk. Just make sure you’re not allergic to it, too. If you are, ask your
doctor what you can do about it.
